​​Food security of a country largely depends on the state of agriculture and its main component – livestock breeding, because this sector is not only a manufacturer of major types of foodstuff for the population, but also a supplier of various raw materials for other sectors of the national economy. The issue of food security in Russia got particularly acute a few years ago, due to economical and political factors. On one hand, the growth rate of the Russian economy began to slow down from the beginning of 2012, and on the other - the import of foodstuff from a number of countries has been banned in 2014 in response to sanctions imposed on Russia, which led to a significant reduction in import of agricultural products on the Russian market and has become a powerful impetus for the development of domestic agriculture. All of the above determines the relevance of the carried out analysis of the state and development of agriculture in Russia from the standpoint of determining the main tendencies and assessing the development prospects. The methodological basis of the research, which has been carried out in the article, are the statistical methods of analysis and forecasting of the basic indicators of the development of agriculture, which allow to obtain a quantitative assessment of the prospects of development in order to form state strategy of ensuring food security of the country.
