The research activity of the Volgograd branch is carried out in accordance with the Federal law on Education and Science, the decrees of the President of the Russian Federation, normative legal acts of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Rosobrnadzor, the Statute of the Volgograd branch of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, and other normative acts of the University.

The main objectives of the research activities of the branch are:

• development of scientific fields which contribute to the improvement of quality of preparation of specialists with higher education and pedagogical and scientific personnel of higher qualification;
  
• effective use of scientific potential of the teaching staff of the branch;
  
• organization and carrying out applied research, scientific consulting and practical works in accordance with the profile of the branch, with the aim of solving urgent problems facing the regional and Russian economy;
  
• organization of improvement of the educational process aimed at improving the quality of education;
  
• development of the financial basis of research and development for the purpose of scientific research at the expense of extra-budgetary funds, grants and contracts;
  
• improving of the quality of the educational process by taking part in the research work of graduates and students.
  

In accordance with the above objectives, the scientific work of the branch includes the following main directions:

• organization and carrying out contractual research work;
  
• organization and carrying out research at its own expense;
  
• carrying out research in accordance with individual plans of the faculty members;
  
• training of skilled personnel;
  
• organization and participation of the faculty members in scientific events (conferences, research activities of young scholars and students, seminars, etc.);
  
• refresher training of teaching staff;
  
• organization of research work of students.
  

The research activity of the branch is carried out in 4 independent fields of research: "Power, government and self-government in Russia" (research supervisor – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, honored scientist of Russia, Director of the branch A. N. Burov), "Nutritive and biological value of raw materials and products: measuring, testing, control and quality management" (scientific supervisor – Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Dean of the faculty of Economics and management, I. M. Volokhov), "Social and systemic characteristics of the modern organization" (research supervisor – Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor, Professor of  Department of management, D. A. Dilman), "Systemic changes in the world and Russian economy in the conditions of transforming society" (scientific supervisor – doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Economics N. I. Morozova).

The total amount of financing of scientific research is  carried out by the branch at the expense of budgets of different levels, grants and agreements for the period from to 2014 amounted to 14 million 852 thousand 900 rubles.

In recent years the most important customers are the office of the Governor and Government of the Volgograd region, Duma of the Volgograd region, the Ministry of Finance of the Volgograd region, the Ministry of press and information of the Volgograd region, open joint-stock company "Piped metallurgical company", the Volgograd regional Department of political party "United Russia", the limited liability Company "Agency of marketing communications", Fund "Institute of economic and social research".

The results of scientific research of the teaching staff of the Department are published in scientific journals.
