The Expert Analytical Center completed the second wave of research on entrepreneurial universities and business schools - generators of entrepreneurs in the new economy. Analysis of the base of startups, depending on the education of their founders, made it possible to formulate a rating of entrepreneurial universities. In total, 39 Russian universities were included in the final rating.

Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in the ranking was fixed in first place in the number of founders of startups among graduates and the number of startups themselves. Thus, PRUE took the second place in the ranking, ahead of Moscow State University, Financial University, NES, RANEPA and other universities. Startups of our graduates successfully attract investments and find support in various sectors of the economy.

According to project manager Kristina Chukavina, the study is based on a comparison of international databases Crunchbase, AngelList, Startup Ranking and LinkedIn, Facebook: “The choice of this model is due to the fact that startup founders register their projects in foreign databases to increase their presence on the Web, networking and attract investment. Crunchbase and AngelList databases contain a large number of indicators of startup activity and success, which are collected from various sources using machine learning methods. ”

The initial analysis base contained 260 thousand technology companies around the world, created in 2010-2019. An in-depth verification of the data revealed 1,181 people with Russian roots who, in the indicated period, created 1,096 world-class startups. Among the founders of each startup there is at least one graduate of a Russian university.

Most technology companies with founders who graduated from Russian universities registered start-ups in Russia (36.1%), slightly less than a third (29.5%) are based in North America, 16.2% - in Europe. True, in recent years (2018–2019), locations have changed: in Crunchbase, only 16.7% of startups with Russian roots indicated their head office in North America, while the share of Europe grew by five percent, Asia - almost doubled.

Most startups with Russian roots that have appeared in the last ten years belong to the IT group, other popular areas for implementing ideas and innovations are trade and services, business services, robotics and artificial intelligence. In 2018–2019, the category “financial services” also became the most common object of interest after IT.

During the study, 19 in-depth interviews were conducted with the founders of world-class startups with a Russian education. Most of their projects are platforms based on artificial intelligence and big data. The respondents of the project brought to the market two dozen services and products for life and business.
